Tiling is a versatile and popular choice for flooring and walls, offering durability, aesthetic appeal, and easy maintenance. However, like any home improvement element, tiling is not immune to misconceptions and myths that can sometimes cloud decision-making or lead to mistakes.

Sometimes this information can even come from unscrupulous contractors who gain an advantage by misleading or not correcting unaware clients. BCA-trained tiling company, Leecon is well-positioned to shed light & truth on the art of tiling!

In this blog, we'll debunk some of the most common misconceptions about tiling, helping you make informed choices for your next renovation project.

Misconception 1: All Tiles are Created Equal

Fact: Not all tiles are the same, and their quality can vary significantly. Factors like tile material, manufacturing process, and craftsmanship influence their durability, appearance, and performance. Porcelain and ceramic tiles, for instance, are known for their strength and resilience, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.

It's important to choose tiles based on their intended use and your specific requirements. Tiles vary in many areas - are they homogenous or glazed? Rough or smooth? Are they perfectly flat or slightly warped from the heat of baking in a kiln?

It's best to visit a tile shop with your contractor or designer so they can give you additional information as you shop. At Leecon it is our standard practice to accompany customers for tile selection.

Misconception 2: Dark Grout is Low Maintenance

Fact: While dark grout may appear to hide dirt and stains better, it's not inherently low maintenance. Grout, regardless of color, can still accumulate dirt, moisture, and mildew over time. The dark color can even make it harder to notice the mold buildup and be counterproductive.

Regular cleaning, the use of quality grout (not cement!) and proper sealing are essential to maintaining the cleanliness and longevity of grout lines, dark or otherwise!

Misconception 3: Bigger Tiles are Always Better

Fact: Larger tiles can create a sense of spaciousness and visual continuity in a room. However, they may not be suitable for every space. Uneven or sloping surfaces can pose challenges when installing large tiles, potentially leading to lippage (uneven edges) or cracking. In really small rooms, the big tile can actually make it look small if there are only very few pieces.

It's important to consider the condition of your substrate, the nature of your layout, and seek professional advice when choosing tile sizes.

Misconception 4: Tiling Over Existing Tiles Always Saves Time and Money

Fact: Overlaying new tiles over existing ones can be a convenient option in some cases, but it's not always the best solution. The condition of the underlying tiles, their adhesion, and the overall structure should be carefully evaluated. Sometimes in wet areas, the tiling may appear okay to overlay but the existing waterproofing could be compromised, leading to a disaster down the road.

In some situations, overlaying can result in a higher floor level, causing issues with doors, doorframes, curbs, and fixtures if these elements are overlooked/not planned for. If the old tiles are already loose and falling off, it can be dangerous to lay over fresh tiles on an unstable pre-existing layer.

A professional assessment is crucial to determine if overlaying is appropriate for your project.

Misconception 5: Grout Doesn't Need Sealing

Fact: Grout is a porous material that can absorb moisture, stains, and contaminants. Sealing grout helps prevent these substances from penetrating and discoloring the grout lines.

Regularly sealing grout is an essential maintenance step, especially in areas prone to spills or moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

However with the advent of modern polyurethane (PU) grout, the grout mixture itself can contain particles that make the resulting grout much less porous when dried and does not require the additional step of applying sealant after.

Misconception 6: DIY Tiling is Easy and Cost-Effective

Fact: While some homeowners on Youtube appear to successfully tackle tiling projects on their own, tiling requires a certain level of skill, precision, and knowledge, not to mention the sheer strength and endurance to mix cement and lay tile over multiple days in a consistent fashion.

Improper installation can lead to issues such as uneven surfaces, cracked tiles, leaky waterproofing, and water damage. DIY tiling can also become very costly if mistakes require professional intervention. A simple tiling job can suddenly need extra hacking, tiling, and waterproofing if done wrong enough.

For complex projects or areas with specific requirements, it is absolutely recommended to consult a professional renovation contractor. Preferably a tiling specialist like Leecon!

Misconception 7: Tiles Are Only for Floors and Walls

Fact: Tiles offer incredible versatility beyond floors and walls. They can be used to create stunning backsplashes, accent borders, decorative niches, and even stylish fireplace surrounds. With a wide range of sizes, shapes, and materials available, tiles can be integrated into various design elements to add texture, color, and visual interest.

By dispelling these common misconceptions, you can approach your tiling projects with a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to achieve the best results. Remember that each tiling project is unique, and seeking professional guidance ensures that you make well-informed decisions that enhance the beauty and longevity of your living spaces.

Misconception 8: Tiles Can Crack Easily Under Impact

Fact: When well-bonded to a substrate like screed with minimal air bubbles, tiled floor can be incredibly tough. Tiles that appear to crack easily or fall off the wall after a few years are the result of shoddy workmanship wherein air gaps are present under the tile, leaving it unsupported and creating weak spots. When well-laid, tiles should be impervious to any form of damage that they will reasonably encounter in a residential context.
